WEEK1-DAY2

1. I am ~ ing

You can use “I am ~ing” to talk about your action right now.

If you use “I do ~”, it sounds like you usually do something.

But “I am ~ing” sounds like it is happening right now.


I am waiting for you.

I am working now.

I am having a great time standing in the sun right now.


Voca

1. beach 해변

Let’s go to the beach!

People were enjoying the sun on the beach.

2. talk about ~ 에 대해 이야기 하다.

He always talks about her.

Can we talk about something else?

3. action 행동

He is not consistent in his action. 그의 행동은 앞뒤가 맞지 않다.

He didn’t take responsibility for his action

4. difference 차이점

There is a very distinct difference.

5. promise 약속하다

2. I have to

I think “I have to R” is a good way to show you have an important task.

When your action is necessary, you can use the “I have to” expression.

You don’t have a choice. You might not want to do it. Still, you do it anyway.

But if you don’t need to do it, if you can choose not to, in that case,

you can say “I don’t have to  do it”.


I have to join too. I have to lose weight.

I have to study.

I have to do this, it’s now or never!

I have to turn off the lights before I leave.

8. don’t need to R ~ 할 필요가 없다.

You don’t need to write it down.

You don’t need to come tomorrow.

9. contest 대회

There is going to be a singing contest next month.

She won the beauty contest.

10. actually 사실은

Actually, I don’t agree to it.

Actually, my dream was to become a white-hacker.

11. learner 학습자

For a learner, he drives well.

12. to be honest 솔직히

13. serious 심각한

3. I must

“I must” is a stronger expression than “I have to”.

When you have to go somewhere, you say “I have to go.” Right?

If you say “I must go,” it sounds much stronger and more serious.


I must catch the train! I must treat them well.

I must tell him the truth! I must return home quickly!

I must try hard!

I must go home before the rain.

I must go see him.

4. client 고객

The affair was settled to the complete satisfaction of the client.

* settle (문제가) 해결되다, 합의를 보다.

5. be about to R  R 하려는 참이다. (이제 막 어떤 일을 하거나, 시작하려 할 때)

I was just about to ask you the same thing.

The bus is just about to leave.

6. fail 실패하다.

Many diets fail because they are boring.

He is not afraid to fail.

7. treat 대접하다.

He stood treat for his frineds. 그는 친구들을 위해 한턱을 내었다.

Don’t forget to treat me to a fabulous dinner.

8. suddenly 갑자기

She was suddenly wide awake, her nerves jangling.

* wide awake 잠에서 완전히 깨다.

* nerve 신경, 긴장 jangling (신경이) 거슬리다.

The game suddenly sparked to life. 경기가 갑자기 불꽃이 튀었다.

9. feel like ~하고 싶다.

I feel like qutting my job.

She felt like telling him the truth.

10. the nearest 가장 가까운

Where is the nearest phone booth?

The nearest ones are the most important ones.

11. public 공공의

You can pay your public utility bills at this counter.

Smoking is prohibited in most public places in the United States.

12. think to oneself (조용히) 속으로 생각하다.

He is think to himself about his problem.

David is just lying in the garden, thinking to himself.

13. start ~ing ~하기 시작하다.

She started laughing loudly.

I started working out to lose weight.

14. bump into ~에 부딪히다.

She threw up her eyes to the man who bump into her.

They never bump into anything, and they can even catch tiny insectes in the air.

15. forget to R ~ 하는 것을 잊다.

I forgot to bring my homework.

Don’t forget to write back to me. 나에게 답장하는 것을 잊지마.

16. turn off 끄다.

She forgot to turn off the gas ring.

Turn that thing off while I’m talking to you!

17. return 되돌아가다.

I waited a long time for him to return.

18. quickly 재빨리

He quickly learned the ins and outs of the job. 그는 그 일의 자세한 내용을 빨리 배웠다.

The police moved quickly to disple the rumours.


4. during

“During” can mean “in the middle of something”. Words that come after “during” are usually nouns.


I fell asleep during class. Please be quite during class.

During the midterm, everyone was stressed out. There was a special guest during the concert.

She was confident during the debate.

* debate: 토론 vacate: 비우다

Do we have to vacate the room during vacation?

I want to go on a trip during summer vacation. Don’t talk during the movie!

Don’t text during dinner! What did you do during the weekend?

5. How is ~ going?

When you want to know how your frineds are doing with their work, you can say or ask, “How’s ~ going?”

“Going” does not mean “going, walking”. You want to know if everything is okay.

It could be just as if you are checking something.

However, when you say “How’s it going?”, that could mean “How are you?” or “What’s up?”


How’s it going with you these days? How’s  your dating going?

How’s your project going?

How’s your research going?

How’s the job interview going?

How’s your studying going?

6. feel + adj

When you want to talk about your emotion, you can use the “feel” expression.


I feel so safe. I feel so happy.

I feel so close to you right now. I feel terrible.

I feel relieved now.
